From the corridors of Lisbon’s public hospitals to the grand Edmée Marques Hall at the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC), comes an invitation to look closely at a hidden and profound fragility at the heart of public healthcare.

In Portugal, around one third of hospital beds are occupied by social cases. These are patients who have been medically discharged but not socially discharged — meaning that, although they no longer require hospitalization from a clinical perspective, they lack the necessary support systems to survive outside the hospital. This includes the absence of informal caregivers, suitable housing, or, in many cases, a place in a care home or public residential facility.

The central fragility faced by these patients is the wait. Many remain in hospital beds for months or even years, alone or among others like them, without any service to engage them during this period. Television, occasional weekend visits from family members — little else. It is a true, and for some a final, Standstill.

This exhibition arises from a series of visits to hospitals in the Lisbon region. A few hours of shared company and life stories revealed the stark contrast between past and present: one vibrant and active, the other stagnant and sterile.

“Standstill” is thus an installation that immerses us in the poetic experience of this contrast: the viewer, too, finds themselves in this limbo. Surrounded by paintings evoking movement, life, and the narrative of memories, flanked by cold, expectant sculptures.

Dos corredores dos hospitais públicos de Lisboa chega à grande sala Edmée Marques, no Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC), um convite a olharmos para uma grande fragilidade aí escondida, no âmago da saúde pública. 

Em Portugal, cerca de um terço das camas hospitalares são ocupadas por casos sociais. Os casos sociais consistem em pacientes que já obtiveram alta médica mas não alta social, isto é, apesar de já não se justificar o seu internamento, estes não têm o sistema de apoio necessário para subsistir fora do hospital. Falamos da falta de cuidadores informais, habitação adequada, ou, em muitos casos, de vaga em lares ou instituições públicas residenciais. 

A grande fragilidade vivida por estes pacientes é a espera. Muitos ficam meses, anos numa cama de hospital, sós ou acompanhados de outros pacientes como eles, sem um serviço que promova qualquer atividade neste tempo de espera. A televisão, as visitas ao fim de semana de alguns familiares, pouco mais. É uma verdadeira, e para alguns derradeira, Paragem.

Esta exposição parte de um conjunto de visitas a hospitais na região de Lisboa. Algumas horas de companhia, a partilha de histórias de vida, permitiram perceber o grande contraste vivido entre o passado e o presente: um exuberante, activo, o outro, estanque, estéril. 

“Paragem” é então uma instalação que nos envolve na experiência poética deste contraste: o observador também dá por si neste limbo. Envolto por pinturas que evocam o movimento, a vida e narrativa das memórias, ladeado por esculturas frias e expectantes.
